Twelve

THE STORM broke away the edges of calm left in the house, stealing the last bit of light from the sky. Left alone in the living room with the dog on the love seat and oblivious to the world around her, I stood with every intention to catch Jae before he came in, but the screen door squeaked, and he ducked under the stoop’s cover, shaking water off his wet black hair.

I sat back down.

It was hard to read Jae sometimes. He’d grown up hard, passed around to relatives who couldn’t have cared less about raising him, then eventually ending up as a dancer in a club for deeply closeted gay men. All before he turned sixteen.

He’d fought me loving him, then battled with himself over loving me, and each damned step of the way, Jae broke my heart just as easily as he filled it.

There was no easy with Jae. Not before. Not now. Most of that was my fault. I was too headstrong, too focused on what I thought was the right thing to do without stopping to see what was around me. But in this—right now—my first thought was of him. I’d be damned if I let Rollins or whoever was hunting my family take Jae from me. So yeah, running toward someone shooting at me might not have been my finest moment, but it’d made sense at the time.

I just had to convince Jae of that.

He sat down on the apothecary chest in front of me, an achingly familiar sprawl of beauty and bone. Our knees touched, his jeans damp enough for mine to wick up some of the rainwater in them. His hands were cold when I took them into mine, and his knuckles were roughened, small daubs of blood crusting in cuts he’d gotten while bashing away his anger at me.

I kissed the backs of his fingers, tasting the blood and the rain on his skin.

Jae pulled one of his hands free from my grip, then tangled his fingers into my hair. He tugged me forward, and I leaned into him, resting my cheek on his collarbone while he cradled my head into the curve of his neck. We sat there, together, breathing in one another, and he stroked my spine, letting me draw his hand to me so I could press his chilled fingers into the warmth of my belly.

The day grew darker around us, dropping us deeper into the shadows as the sun slipped away from the city and all we were left with was the glow from the pendant lights in the foyer. I didn’t care if we were bathed in the light from a thousand candles or a single remaining star in the sky, I just wanted Jae to never let me go.

Even as I feared sometimes he would.

“You drive me crazy, Cole-ah.” His breath tickled and danced across my scalp as he spoke. “You’re going to get yourself killed, and then where will I be?”

“I really didn’t try to die today.
